Sprained Thumbs and fingers Wrist & Hand

These injuries can be small but very painful when injured. Sprained thumbs ( Physiotherapy in Grange )  are fairly common with a range of specific sports such as skiing.  The reason for this is because during a fall the ski pole is between thumb and fingers.  Any sport where the hand is stretched out on a fall can create damage to most commonly, the inner ligament of the middle thumb joint.  Like any soft tissue injury the RICE procedure should be followed immediately after injury and for 24 to 48 hours post injury.  This consists of Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.  Thumbs or injuries of the hand can be slow healing due to the complexity of the structures and because rest of this area can be difficult.  These injuries may take up to 6 –12 months to heal properly.  However thumbs and fingers respond  well to strapping or bracing which can allow for continuation of activity and sport, while the soft tissue heals.  Strapping or...

They are a great weight-bearing exercise for optimizing bone health, Many clients avoid squats due to knee arthritis, but interestingly, people with knee arthritis are often the ones who need squats the most. Strength around the knee joint is the best way to reduce pain and protect the joint surfaces. Your muscles are like the ‘springs’ in your car suspension – they are the ‘shock absorbers’ around your joint. If they are not working optimally, your knee joint will not be happy. In order to get the muscles working optimally, you have to squat correctly. Here are our tips: Keep your knees pointing the same direction as your middle toes! If your feet are pointing straight ahead, your knee-caps should face straight ahead. If your feet are ‘open’ slightly in a V-sha...

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment Grange

The carpel tunnel is a narrow bony and soft tissue passageway at the wrist which allows certain nerves and other soft tissue vessels to pass through into the hand. Sometimes pressure can build up in this tunnel causing pressure on the soft tissue structures and often in particular on the nerves passing through. This can cause numbness, pins and needles and often pain.  It is commonly seen during pregnancy or those with excessive fluid.  It is commonly a problem at night due to resting positions of the wrist. Physiotherapy can be of benefit and treatment can be successful with conservative treatments.  We always use our hands!  So living with pain and stiffness in this area can be difficult.  Sometimes surgery is necessary.   Surgery release of this tunnel involves a small operation where they release some of the soft tissue structures in order to take the pressure off these vessels. Following surgery, it will take some time for swelling and pain to ...

Is your ankle injury not improving?

Image
An ankle injury could range from a simple soft tissue sprain to a fracture.  Injury to the talar dome is an injury to part of the ankle joint.  The talar bone is one of the major bones that make up the  joint. An ankle sprain is a soft tissue injury to the ligament structure around the ankle joint most often occurring as you roll on your foot.   Ligaments stabilise joints and prevent excess movement so it stands to reason that if you have a significant soft tissue injury causing lack of stability then the joint may become unstable and may roll so much that the actual joint or part of is damaged.  If severe this may cause a talar dome injury.  The dome aspect of the talus bone, which is the joint surface, becomes damaged. A talar dome injury may be just to the cartilage attached to the bone or to the bone itself or a combination of both.   It is most often diagnosed by bone scan and may not picked up by xray.  A xray will often be ...
